Time Off

I finally got a summer break where I didn't have to worry about board exams or other things. It was like a gift from heaven having two weeks completely away from school (even though I did spend some time to visit a nearby residency program). For the first week, Cohen and I were in Utah by ourselves and Rach joined us for the last week. I was nervous about being on the airplane with just me and him but things went pretty good....until the battery ran out of the dvd player and there was no more Willy Wonka. That led to a bunch of screaming, and it was already past his bedtime so the screaming just got worse and luckily I was sitting next to two absolutely wonderful people (who's names I sending to the Vatican to be given sainthood) who took over after they saw how near tears I was and felt bad for me. The last two hours were a bit sketchy but we got through it and no one got seriously hurt although there were a couple passengers that looked like they wanted to throw their complimentary peanuts at me. Once in Utah we had a blast from beginning to end.
We were honing Cohen's swimming skills and floaty devices.
He was also used as a balance while the unicycle got dusted off and put to good use.
Running around the back yard while mooing was a daily occurrence. He would wake up in the mornings and run down the hall, pull a chair to the window so he could climb on it and would say "cow!," and "chicks!" each morning. The first day we were back in NJ he woke up and did the same but when he looked out the window he was a bit more quizzical "cow?" and "chicks?". It was sorta sad.
Cohen liked playing on this ride for a while before moving up to this ride!
He really like going on the motorcycle (which I'm not supposed to tell anyone because Rachael doesn't want to be judged) and cried when we took him off.
"Tour de Southern Utah" was great and has been the best ride I've ever taken.
Everyone had a great time and are already planning out next year's ride which will probably be through Yellowstone. Can't wait! (If I can actually go...I may have a job, with real hours, and responsibilities; weird).

Lots of scenic country was seen, a few wild turkeys, a peacock or two, bulls crossing the road and chasing Carson, Shaun taking pictures of himself while riding at high speeds, Dad hanging in the back soaking up every minute, and me getting angry and the lousy top-end of my bike. A great time was had by all, even the local bike guru of Escalante loved having us around and was real intent on making sure we knew he had tires for all makes and models so much so that we had a feeling that someone should stay up during the night and guard our tires from "The Bike Doctor" and his sticky fingers.

2 Days and 3 Stars?

During the last 2 days I randomly walked by these people during my commute. Am I surprised that I recognized them? Yes. Were they surprised that somebody recognized them? Definitely! Except for Ann, of course.

Bachelor Update

Blisters after church. Thanks a lot church.

Just some of the additional fishing pics. Imagine fighting a fish with that 9 foot rod! What a blast!

Bachelor Week...Not the TV show

That's what I woke up to this morning. Walking around the apartment has made the blister quite a bit bigger, which is doing nothing for my confidence in doing something fun tomorrow.
That's a 20 inch cutting board!
Taking the picture myself made it hard to get the entire fish in frame. I had to hold the fish farther away from the camera making it look smaller than it really is!

Last Thursday Rachael and Cohen went to Utah for a wedding leaving me all alone in our quiet apartment with nothing to do, except for whatever I wanted. So, to kick bachelor week off, I had a dinner of chips and dip with a side of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups which was very tasty and also meant that I didn't have any dishes to do. I was able to sleep an entire night without be woken by crying, or elbows and knees. For the first night in months I slept until my alarm woke me up and, because the sleep was deep enough, I was able to have dreams; not something that has happened for a while. I've also biked every day that I've wanted and not felt guilty because I should be home spending time with family or taking care of other duties.
However, the freedom hasn't been all good because while out on a beach/fishing trip yesterday I didn't put on sunscreen which has left me in a good deal of pain. In reality, this has been the worse sunburn I've ever had as my feet have blistered and swollen up a bit. While the care-free life has been welcome, it also has been limited by my own self destruction.
The fishing trip was a bit of a success as I caught the biggest fish in my life and really enjoyed the fight. I was fishing from a pier and could see in the distance some turbulence in the water making its way slowly toward the pier. As it came closer you could tell that it was a bunch of bait fish jumping out of the water and swimming sporadically as they were being chased by larger fish. The excitement on the pier started to build as they came within casting distance and everyone started jockeying for position. The first guy to catch a fish was bringing it in and it turned out to be one of these baitfish (which are about 10-12 inches). He got it close to the pier when a bigger fish came up from behind and bit it right in half, leaving him with only half a fish. I casted out and caught one of the predatory fish which dragged me from the left side of the pier, out across the end, and onto the right side before I could bring it up. It was a lot of fun. One guy caught one and it took his whole fishing pole into the water! Unbelievably enough, 30 minutes later a different guy got a strike and as he was reeling it in the first thing to come out of the water was a fishing pole! The other guy grabbed it and reeled it in and brought in the biggest fish of the night. It was incredible.
Once home, I slabbed on some aloe, filleted my fish and went to bed. Didn't wake up until 8:45! This is the latest I've slept in for 17 months! However, I haven't been able to walk around much because I'm trying to nurse my sunburned and swollen feet back to health so I can enjoy whatever tomorrow may bring. Who knows, maybe I'll go cycling, hiking, to Atlantic City, or watch a movie without listening to Rachael say "bad word" under her breath after every swear.
Well, it's lunch time and I have some left-over chips and Reese's from the other night!
